The clove tree is an evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, commonly known as the Spice Islands. However, slowly but surely it took its root on other islands as well. Nowadays clove trees can be found in Madagascar and Sri Lanka too. It is important to make a distinction between a clove tree – the whole plant, and a clove – a dried flower bud harvested after flowering and used as a spice. Clove is an unavoidable culinary ingredient in different marinades and fruit drinks. But that is not all. It is very friendly to many people as well. Clove has an alluringly warm, spicy and woody aroma. It has been recognized by the fragrance industry, where it is a very welcome guest. Its enticing scent is not all it has though. Due to its antiseptic and analgesic properties, it was traditionally used for oral care. Its dental reputation has not tarnished at all, particularly in France.
Clove essential oil has pain-relieving and antimicrobial properties. A drop or two in your mouthwash will help ease gum soreness and toothache. Apart from that, clove essential oil mixed into skin care products will have a stimulating effect on your body. It will slightly increase your blood pressure in a jiffy, and eliminate the feeling of exhaustion. That is why it is a popular ingredient in massage oils. A drop or two in a homemade air freshener spray will make the air warm, cozy and welcoming, and at the same time have an antimicrobial effect. But please beware. This self-confident and strong oil can cause skin and mucous membrane irritation. It is thus recommendable to opt for knowingly dosed clove applications.
